Charts: Visualizing Lead Time Data

"What charts should I use for my Lead Time data? I heard that using a Histogram is a bad idea..."

💡 Different charts let you see different things, so never use a single chart. Combine multiple views of the same data to get different insights.

A Histogram can be a very compact way to visualize ranges of values, and communicate capability, but it doesn't let you see changes over time (or reference sets) very easily. The Scatterplot and Run Chart are better for spotting periods of volatility or stability, and revealing trends; use these two to identify periods of interest, and the histogram to zoom into them to do further analysis.

📊 In particular, a histogram can show "humps" in the distribution, which might hint the existence of a probabilistic source of delay that ends up affecting clusters of work items, and this in turn might suggest ideas for process improvement.

Also, in all charts, filter the data by work item type, or by source of delay, as they often follow different distributions.
